Mathias A. Klein III

Mathias A. Klein III, Chairman

"Today, many tool manufacturers make their products far away from the American shores. Klein Tools makes over 3,000 products, has 7 manufacturing plants in the U.S. and manufactures the majority of those products in the U.S. The Klein family has been committed to manufacturing the highest quality hand tools with unmatched durability and comfort for over 155 years. The result…authentic Klein Tools…is the number one choice among professional tradesmen.

"I hope the information on this page will help clarify questions about our company that you might have, and as always, we appreciate your business."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do you reference ‘American Made’ or continue to reference ‘Made in the USA Heritage’ if you’re no longer making all your tools in America?
A: Klein Tools was founded in the USA in 1857. We are continually expanding the manufacture of tools here in the USA. In 2003 we opened a plant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois that supplies forgings made from high-quality, U.S.-made steel. In 2006 we opened a new corporate headquarters and screwdriver plant in Lincolnshire, Illinois. In 2008 we purchased Heritage Cutlery in Bolivar, New York where we manufacture high-quality scissors and other cutlery products. In 2010 we opened an Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in Mansfield, Texas where we manufacture pliers and wire strippers. Investment in four manufacturing plants in the USA in the last 10 years is convincing evidence that we are committed to manufacturing in the USA.
Q: What does ‘Made in the USA’ mean?
A: When our products say ‘Made In The USA,’ they are, in fact, made in the USA. It is illegal to mislabel a product's Country of Origin. According to the FTC, “For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the US territories and possessions.” You can learn more here.
Q: Why are some of your tools made overseas?
A: The vast majority of the products we sell are made in the USA. There are some products that are manufactured outside of our borders, but in most cases these are products that cannot economically be produced in the USA, cannot be made in the USA to Klein Tools’ quality specifications or there are patents that protect these products from being manufactured by Klein at this time. We want to supply the American worker with the best tools available anywhere in the world, and it is our goal to manufacture these tools in the USA whenever possible.
Q: Why does it seem like most of your new products are made overseas?
A: It may look like we are getting all of our new products from other countries, but that is not the case. We have introduced many new USA manufactured products in recent years (hole-making, screwdrivers, fish tapes, utility wrenches, buckets, bags…). We want to supply the American worker with the best tools available anywhere in the world, and it is our goal to manufacture these tools in the USA. Some of our new products are made outside the USA. In the past decade we have opened four new manufacturing facilities in the USA. We have also invested heavily in new equipment and tooling in the US plants to expand our capacity and to continually improve our quality. Some of our new products are made outside the USA. Most are made in the USA.
Q: Is Klein Tools shipping jobs overseas?
A: Klein Tools has never closed a manufacturing facility in the United States and sent jobs overseas, and we have no intention of doing that in the future.
Q: What percentage of your tools is made in the United States?
A: The vast majority of the products that we sell are made in the USA. The exact percentage changes frequently as we insource some of the products to our USA plants and introduce new products, so a specific percentage would not stay the same for very long.
Q: A Klein Tools competitor still makes certain tools in the USA that Klein does not; why?
A: We do not have the expertise to manufacture every product we sell. We manufacture within our competencies. When we cannot manufacture in the USA it is produced overseas.
